THE BRIEF
Fox Browne Creative has had a long relationship with andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, so we were delighted to lead the re-imagining of this 16-year-old South African, award-winning, luxury safari lodge. andBeyond Phinda Rock Lodge was built in 1997 in an African Adobe style featuring stucco wall finishes and reed ceilings.
Our brief was to keep the vernacular but give the lodge a refreshed and updated look and feel meeting the needs of today’s luxury adventure traveller. We had to design a strong identity to compliment the other five lodges on andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve.
THE INSPIRATION
The lodge’s dramatic location, nestled amongst the giant granite outcrops informed the stoney colour palette. In order not to detract from the beautiful setting, we kept colour contrasts to a minimum and focused on tactile textures with thick woven cane sofas and hand embroidery, celebrating the Zulu weaving and craft of the region. All architectural elements were updated in the bathrooms with granite basins and floating raw edge vanities being the heroes of these spaces.
