ANDBEYOND - PHINDA FOREST LODGE - PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, SOUTH AFRICA
The thoughtful redesign ensures that every element, from the contemporary design in a rare forest setting to the serene interiors underpinned by sustainable practices, gives guests a deep sense of place immersed in the heart of Zululand.
THE BRIEF
Our task, in partnership with architect Jack Alexander, was to honour the original modernist design and enhance the unique sand forest setting. This involved a both a comprehensive interior makeover of the existing guest suites and main areas, and the addition of new structures such as a signature library pavilion, a nest-like fire pit, and a reimagined bar area. New gym and spa facilities were also added to enhance the overall wellness offering at andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge.
THE INSPIRATION
Our design approach was inspired by the profound beauty of the sand forest and the vibrant Zulu culture. We aimed to honor the lodge's original modernist architecture while infusing elements that reflect local heritage and natural surroundings. The reimagined central guest area includes a new library and gallery, and a bird’s nest fire pit inspired by the local dark-backed weaver.
Using locally sourced materials such as Zulu matting and reclaimed railway sleepers, we blended bush modernism with Zulu Zen to create luxurious yet serene spaces. Every element was carefully selected to create a seamless integration of nature, culture, and contemporary luxury. Guest suites were meticulously redesigned to maximize comfort and connectivity with nature. Fabrics and color palettes were inspired by the sand forest botanicals, subtle use of Zulu pattern and texture. Bathrooms were completely updated with new finishes and fittings, featuring a repurposed bath in a woven cradle basket inspired by Zulu weaving.
