THE BRIEF
Tucked along the picturesque Punakha Valley, along the banks of the Mo Chu River Punakha River in Bhutan, andBeyond Punakha River Lodge was originally established by an American owner but sadly never competed. We had to honour the original footprint and amenities.
Our task, in collaboration with local artisans and craftsmen, was to refurbish the existing structures while adding new elements such as a two bedroomed family suite, spa, traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, pool and River House. Inspired by the breath-taking surroundings, we aimed to blend traditional Bhutanese architecture with modern comforts, keeping the lodge simple and unpretentious.
THE INSPIRATION
Bhutan's majestic landscapes and rich cultural heritage served as our primary inspiration for the lodge's design. Drawing from the Bhutanese vernacular, we utilized natural materials such as locally quarried stone and timber in the architecture. The design of the spa and hot stone bath, building was inspired by traditional Bhutanese barns. Typical of the region, we used decorative painted and gilded details on the interior woodwork, paying homage to Bhutanese craftsmanship. Each element was carefully selected to create the merging of nature and culture in the beauty of the Himalayas.
The safari-style tents, suspended within traditional Bhutanese timber structures, provide unique accommodation in the region, giving guests a sense of adventure
