ANDBEYOND - MNEMBA ISLAND, TANZANIA
The redesign draws deeply from the Swahili coast, blending natural textures and materials like woven makuti thatch, coral stone, and reclaimed wood.
THE BRIEF
As long-time collaborators with &Beyond, we were entrusted with reimagining the iconic Mnemba Island. Our brief was to preserve the lodge’s intimate barefoot luxury while embracing a fresh, vibrant aesthetic that feels timeless. Working alongside Nicholas Plewman Architects, we set out to create a retreat that celebrates the natural beauty of Zanzibar and embodies understated elegance.
THE INSPIRATION
The redesign draws deeply from the Swahili coast, blending natural textures and materials like woven makuti thatch, coral stone, and reclaimed wood. Inspired by the island’s white sands and lush greenery, interiors feature an earthy palette, handwoven textiles, and bespoke furniture that reflects Zanzibari craftsmanship. Sustainability was integral, with solar power, natural ventilation, and local materials ensuring minimal environmental impact.
THE RESULT
The result is a harmonious retreat that feels intrinsically connected to its surroundings. Rebuilt from the ground up, the new Mnemba offers expanded guest areas, private beach bandas, and serene spaces like a beachfront bar and intimate spa. The design integrates nature, culture, and thoughtful sustainability, offering guests an immersive and timeless barefoot luxury experience.
